Years of lawsuit between Apple and VirnetX finally concluded with a Jury of Texas’ ordered Apple to Pay the Nevada based Software Company $502.8 million, Blomberg reported.
Both the company locked horns in litigation since 2010 when VirnetX sued Apple of infringing for of its patents. There was the time when the two FaceTime and VPN VirtnetX technologies were of huge demands.
Ultimately, Apple’s FaceTIme secure communication and VPN demands were rise and company VirtnetX accused Apple of patient infringement.
In the first major ruling, Apple was asked to pay $625 Million for the same. This was in year 2016. The verdict was later on quashed by Federal Circuits judge and from where the case proceeded for two retrials. After the retrials, Apple was ordered to pay $303 million at first and then $439.7 million to VirtnetX.
In January, U.S Patent and Trademark office invalidated the VirtnetX patents and this led the Apple to appeal against the court’s decision. Their appeal was rejected that time and was asked to pay the full amount for the settlement.
But in November 2019, a three Judge Panel voided that $502.6 million amount. However, the judges did not find a jury’s finding some older iPhone models infringedtwo VirtnetX patents. Because of this, the Apple sought to have the appeals court reconsider.
“This case has been going on for over a decade, with patents that are unrelated to the core operations of our products and have been found to be invalid by the patent office. Cases like this only serve to stifle innovation and harm consumers.”
