Apple Working On its In-House Modems for Upcoming iPhones, iPads

According to report, Apple Company is currently working on its own In-House Modems development and planning to integrate in its upcoming iPhones and iPads. For those who are not aware, the company currently uses Qualcomm’s modem or 5G modems in its iPhone 12 lineup of phones. But now the Apple has changed the plan and wants to release its upcoming iPhones powered by its own in-House Modems.

Apple Senior Vice-President of Hardware Technologies, “Mr. Johny Srouji” stated in town hall meeting with Apple Employees that the company will soon start offer its own 5G modems which will enable another key transition. He explained that long-term strategic investments like these are a critical part of enabling our products and will rich pipeline of innovative technologies for the company future.

Apple Working On its In-House Modems

Since, Apple’s latest iPhones i.e., iPhone 12 series of phones are powered by Qualcomm’s 5G modems components which had already taken Qualcomm to court over patent licensing fees in 2017, which was settled later on. On other hand, Apple had also worked with Intel Corporation from 2016 to 2018, but this partnership had to change its supplier as it wasn’t able to deliver 5G modems for Apple 2020 devices. Let’s take have a look at Srouji’s statement on this matter.

“This year, we kicked off the development of our first internal cellular modem which will enable another key strategic transition,” he said. “Long-term strategic investments like these are a critical part of enabling our products and making sure we have a rich pipeline of innovative technologies for our future.”

For those who are not aware, Apple Company acquired Intel’s Smartphone Modems unit including around 2200 employees, equipment, leases, intellectual property in 2019, and it is expected that the company will pay $1 billion to Intel Corporation for acquisition of Intel’s Modems and result in, their Intel’s modem division will be responsible for Apple’s first cellular modem.

Report says, Apple will not use Qualcomm Modems in future iPhones and iPads, and the Apple’s first Modem powered iPhones and iPads will be release in 2021. At the moment, there is not complete information actually when Apple will release first products based on its in-house modems.
